APEM’s thermal aerial surveys capture information which is used to assess heat loss and thermal inefficiencies in residential and industrial properties, identifying parts of buildings that could benefit from insulation, modification or repair.

Our teams are called upon to inspect the condition of utility assets, including water and wastewater treatment facilities, power lines, solar panels and buried pipelines.

Benefits of thermal aerial surveys

Thermal aerial surveys offer a unique way of gathering thermographic data for a wide range of uses. By mounting the very latest thermal camera technology in specialist survey aircraft, we are able to carry out surveys ranging from small-scale building and asset surveys to rapid and cost-effective thermal mapping of entire towns and cities.

Our surveys can be tailored to meet the specific requirements of each survey. Our thermal sensor captures accurate thermal data as a continuous record of the area of interest and this permanent data can subsequently be revisited and analysed as necessary. Repeat surveys allow changes to be detected or can confirm that remedial works have been implemented.

APEM aerial surveys cover extensive areas in a single flight, meaning that thermal mapping of towns and cities can be rapidly completed. This allows us to identify thermal characteristics across the built environment.


Other uses of thermal aerial surveys

Pipe leak surveys

We carry out thermal aerial surveys for the water industry that highlight potential leaks in underground water pipes. We do this by spotting areas along the pipeline that show up as a different temperature to surrounding land, indicating that leaking water may be causing a change in temperature.

Thermal plumes

Aerial surveys of thermal plumes can be used for a range of applications in both coastal and inland waters. These include detecting leaks from long sea outfalls, assessing the influence of groundwater upwelling on river flows, and monitoring thermal industrial effluent and oil spills.

Asset inspection

Data from thermal surveys can be used to locate and map linear assets such as pipelines and overhead power lines. Surveys of specific assets such as water and wastewater treatment facilities and electrical substations can be performed quickly to identify where remedial work is required.
