Originally from South Africa, Cassy is one of several ‘new’ in-team project managers that APEM have recruited in the last year. Our project managers aim to ensure that projects are met effectively and efficiently, by supporting our technical specialists and allowing them to concentrate on the more technical requirements of a project.

With an undergraduate degree in wildlife conservation and a masters in conservation science, Cassy was always destined for a career in environmental science. A self-confessed helper/facilitator/fixer, Cassy applied for the role because it combined her love of the environment with her softer skills, playing a vital role in building successful client relationships.

Every day brings a unique set of challenges and tasks, but Cassy is a stickler for detail and scrutinises all forms of data. From gauging where a project is in its timeline using time sheets, project codes and tasks, to providing a client ‘update on a page’, she’s precise and exact in everything that she does.

Cassy commented:

A pet peeve of mine is ensuring that we make things simple and meaningful. It’s very easy to get carried away and supply lots of information, but what value does that bring and what does it mean to our clients?

Cassy also works hard to ensure that her projects don’t have a single point of failure and are not reliant on one individual. To aid this, she has been maximising the use of online resources and tools to encourage collaboration and effective file management.

The project manager role is pivotal to APEM and ensures that teams including marine wildlife image analysts, data operations, technical specialists and consultants all come together to deliver the best possible outcome for our clients. By ensuring that clients are always fully informed, we can head off issues before they become a problem.

APEM’s project management team continues to grow, and the benefits that the team bring are many. Under Cassy’s guidance and tenacity, we have established new processes and embedded them into the day-to-day norm of running multi-disciplinary projects.

When asked what she loves the most about her role at APEM, Cassy replied “I love seeing improvements taking shape and the team grow in confidence and capability. Knowing that I have played a small role in that is so rewarding.”
