We champion consistency, reliability, and quality in our data analysis and that is why clients from virtually every continent choose to send their samples and analysis work to us.
Freshwater sample analysis
APEM’s extensive experience in macroinvertebrate sample analysis has been built upon for many years. Between them the large team of macroinvertebrate specialists have over a combined 162 years of taxonomic experience, always keeping up-to-date with new additions to fauna including invasive species.
Our biologists provide accurate identification of freshwater macroinvertebrates to species or family level, to produce reliable data to support the monitoring and assessment of freshwater ecosystems for a wide range of clients.
APEM staff can offer the highest quality of macroinvertebrate identification and seven staff hold the Natural History Museum Freshwater Macroinvertebrate Species Identification Qualification (E062). As an endorsement of quality, APEM recently provided an external audit of freshwater macroinvertebrate sample analysis for the EA, SEPA and currently provides this for NRW.
We are also the only external organisation that has provided ring-test schemes in freshwater macroinvertebrate species identification for these bodies. APEM analysts are familiar with many invasive and non-native species including the demon shrimp (Dikerogammarus haemobaphes) and its close relative Dikerogammarus villosus; also known as the “killer” shrimp.
Marine analysis
APEM’s marine sample analysis expertise includes marine invertebrates, meiofauna, zooplankton, phytoplankton, larval and adult fish, diatoms, seagrasses and macroalgae. Our marine biologists are trained to the highest standard in benthic analysis, and all sorting and identification is subject to rigorous in-house quality assurance that follows North East Atlantic Marine Biological Analytical Quality Control Scheme (NMBAQC) best practice guidelines.
We have supported the development of the NMBAQC taxonomic literature list for several years and have recently completed 2020’s update. With over 3,500 literature records the latest revision has added 400 records to the previous 2018 report.
As the appointed administrator for several components, APEM are the benchmark for benthic invertebrate, particle size and fish sample processing until 2023. The NMBAQC scheme underpins our desire to ensure that best practice methods advance through collaboration and training, giving clients the confidence to make informed decisions on the impacts on marine habitats.
APEM’s BioLab is also UKAS accredited for phytoplankton identification and regularly participate in international quality assurance schemes.
