World Poetry Day 2023

For 2021 we received just under 100 entries in total, from the mountains of Snowdonia to a humble garden hedgehog.
The internal competition’s 12 monthly winners were initially voted for by staff across the APEM Group team. However the final decision for the title of Photo of the Year 2021 was made by Matt Robinson, Creative Director at Frankl. The APEM marketing team have been working with Matt and his team for several months now and we were happy that he agreed to provide an independent final choice – thank you, Matt!
This is what he had to say:
“I am honoured to have been asked to judge the APEM Photo of the Year Competition. With a number of equally strong contenders for the win, selecting the winner was a tough task. Working closely with APEM over the last 12 months in developing and augmenting the employer brand, it’s inspiring to learn how much passion for the natural environment (and talent with a camera) lies within. Demonstrated by the quality of entries in this year’s competition, it’s clear a strong sense of purpose and meaning drive the business forward.”
The winner is the adult Australasian Gannet by Lewis Hawkins, Lead Image Analyst.
A big congratulations to you Lewis!
Matt’s thoughts on the photo:
“It just pipped the other entries to take the top spot. Lewis’ photo beautifully captures in subtle detail the Gannet’s varying plumage and colour. Compositionally, the shot is a stunner with a beady focal point being a bright azure eye sitting in the lower left thirds, offsetting the soft, almost pastel-like plumage right through to the jet black wing tip flight feathers. A beautiful shot that must have taken a huge amount of patience and understanding to get.”
