APEM staff member collecting nets

The audit assesses a variety of factors important to the utilities industry including health and safety, environment and corporate social responsibility.

Most companies expect their suppliers to achieve a compliance score above 80%. Yet APEM scored 100% in all categories except health and safety which still achieved an impressive 99%. This meant our overall score was 100%.

These high scores demonstrate APEM’s capabilities and high standards that we work to as a key supplier in the utilities sector. This certification shows our clients that APEM’s management systems operate at or above minimum industry standards. Many of our clients such as Northern Power Grid and Bristol Water rely on Achilles as a supply chain management tool.

The Achilles Verify UVDB audit is a procurement certification for suppliers in the utilities industry. We have been a member of the Achilles UVDB community since 2005. This year APEM completed the audit to Category B2. This is an independent audit of our health and safety, environment, quality management systems and corporate social responsibility.

Auditors from Achilles spent two days with us to complete the assessment. During the first day they examined APEM’s systems for each of the categories in detail. The second day was onsite checking the systems were properly implemented in practice.

The auditors were particularly impressed with our health and safety management system. At APEM, any field scientist working alone must carry a satellite tracker with them to help manage the risks of lone working. These units allow us to track the location of our employees. In the event of an emergency, the surveyors can summon appropriate help through the use of the satellite trackers SOS button.

Luke Teague, APEM’s Health & Safety Manager, says;

We are really pleased to have received such high marks in the Achilles audit. It reflects our hard work and commitment to ensuring we have robust systems that are properly implemented on the ground.

This is important to us, as not only is the safety of our staff paramount but also provides reassurance to our clients  that we take Health & Safety extremely seriously. It’s also useful to get a sense check from the auditors and know our processes are working to high standards.
