Since 2012, APEM have been helping clear Manchester’s waterways with the ‘Irwell Pride’, our purpose-built litter boat. The boat is based in the upper Manchester Ship Canal and River Irwell corridor, which flows through the heart of the city to Salford Quays. And we’re offering local companies the chance to get on board and be seen being green!

Over the past decade, dedicated APEM staff and volunteers have cleared an estimated 40,000 litres of rubbish from Manchester and Salford’s waterways. Although the main source of litter is plastic bottles, we’ve found an assortment of rubbish from footballs to fridges, and even a message in a bottle! Each trip nets around 1,000 litres of litter and harmful plastics, making the area more pleasant for people and wildlife. It also prevents these plastics breaking down and eventually making their way into the ocean.
