Hannah Clough

I’m Hannah and I’m a second-year student at Lancaster University. Over the summer, I came to APEM looking for an opportunity to gain experience in an office setting and learn about the business world in an industry which is so important to the future of my generation.

Throughout my time at APEM, I gained valuable insight into the inner workings of an environmental consultancy, as well as experience in an (albeit virtual) office environment, and I’ve come away with newfound understanding of the structure and logistics of a successful business.

My summer with APEM lasted 10 weeks, splitting my time in half to work in both Image Analysis and HR, specifically working with the Recruitment Team. In the Recruitment Team, some of my key roles included scheduling interviews, corresponding with candidates and attending HR divisional review meetings. One of the most interesting parts about this was understanding first-hand the interaction HR has with the business.

In image analysis, I worked alongside other analysts to scan through aerial survey images, locating, measuring and identifying targets within them (including various sea birds and occasionally marine mammals!). As well as learning about a new occupational role within the sector, this experience was fascinating personally, and I saw some incredible things as a member of this team.

The experience I gained at APEM introduced me to so many potential future careers related to my field of study, which is something I was looking to explore. It helped me potentially refine my study going into my third year, and I acquired many new skills transferable to my future employment. Not to mention how much I enjoyed my summer at APEM and working with such outstanding professionals.
