Unfortunately, CV19 still significantly impacts our daily lives, however APEM’s Dr Sarah Davie has found a way to support her local community whilst getting creative and taking care of her mental health and wellbeing.
A keen crafter and sewer, Sarah joined a local community group at the beginning of lockdown in response to the need for more PPE for key workers. Named the “Horsell Scrubbers”, the group reached 150 people in and around Horsell, Surrey at its largest.
Most of the group have never met in person but have kept in touch and spurred each other on through an active WhatsApp group chat.
Since Easter, the group has made 650 sets of scrubs, some from weird and wonderful old duvet sets, and 1000’s of masks for the NHS and local community. Sarah’s personal favourite was made from an old dinosaur print duvet cover (pictured right).
The group also participated in the Scrubs Glorious Scrubs campaign which used fabric designed by Noah Evans (son of radio presenter Chris Evans) to make non-surgical scrubs for the NHS. Sarah is pictured below (bottom left) modelling a set of the scrubs!
Sarah said, “During lockdown this has made us all feel like we are helping in some way and really helped my mental health. I’ve made about 25 sets, and then cut out sets for other less confident sewers as well.”
The final handover of the ‘Noah’s Scrubs’ has now happened, and the group are planning a short break but are determined to continue getting creative and supporting other local charities. They are also (once allowed), looking forward to meeting up in person to celebrate their achievements!
